So I don't have a lot of video's up on the channel as I've kind of been focused on playing Tomb Raider 2013, but occasionally hopping over to Dragon Ball Xenoverse.
But I wanted to take sometime to post about other games I intend on playing for YouTube. Now I'm recording things using two specific recorders: Dxtory, and Open Broadcast Software.
DXTORY Pro's
- The software is easy to configure and off your running.
- Can record games that are in full-window mode.
- Can record dual audio.
DXTORY Con's
- Dual audio does not record all the time which can ruin recordings.
- File save sizes are massive, even when using alternative codec the files saves are quite large.
- Quirks of setting up the program to record can be irritating.
- Requires an extra step in order for dual audio to be played on the video.
OPEN BROADCAST SOFTWARE Pro's
- Records Dual Audio
- Good for live streaming (which I don't do)
- Small file sizes
- Fairly easy to use once you know how to configure things, and its not that hard.
- Can set it up to record from separate video streams (like if your using a webcam to capture your reactions.
OPEN BROADCAST SOFTWARE Con's
- Software takes some getting used to.
- Won't always record games in full screen mode.
Alright, so with that in mind, I've been using Dxtory primarily and with mixed results. So far in my using it, it has failed to record my mic audio on one recording which affected a single video. But here recently it failed to record on several video's. Now Dxtory has just one file, but records both audio tracks to it, and then you have to make use of a second step in order to merge the second audio track which is embedded in the video. Its really a ridiculous step that has to be taken, but you gotta do it if you want to have commentary on your video's.
But recently I've learned a few tricks on using Open Broadcast that while I have to record some/most video's in the windowed mode, It does allow me to focus the recording on just a the part of the window that the game is being displayed on.
So moving forward I'll likely be using more Open Broadcast as it seems to be more reliable than Dxtory. Now I know that some people like using FRAPS...but that one costs money to use for more than 30 seconds of recording (yeah the free trial version only allows for 30 seconds).
Anyway I'm looking forward to doing some more recordings, though I think I'll try and add more games like the ever popular - Minecraft - to my channel.
If anyone knows of a great recording program for the PC like Dxtory, or OBS, that is easy to use and 100% free. Then be sure to leave me a comment and I'll check it out.
