So hopping online I found a number of pictures of the Narthrax Dragon with different paint jobs. Notably there is this one:
Now I don't have the same array of paints that pro painters have, but I make do with what I got.
Now I am using a junk brush that is really good for dry brushing paint onto mini's. It holds a decent amount of paint after tapping the excess off. It takes a few extra coats of paint to get the job done, but this ensures that you can get into all the creases and crevasses. The only down side is that I do not have a mat-black paint, but rather I have a glossy black paint.
Its not perfect but its what I got. This paint didn't want to go on smoothly when painting the mini. It left streaks, but the paint dried fast and allowed for another coat to go on, followed by a final go-over with the brush to get anything left.
Now from here I broke out my good paints, namely the "blood red" I have and figured this will do for a start of the final work up.
With all the parts done I then broke out my "sunburst yellow" and set in on the wings.
Now I'm not that far along in painting with this second color. I've gotten just the wings done and will work out other spots to paint yellow. From here I'll use some "skull white" for the horns. Some "codex grey" for weathering the stone the dragon is on, who I like the black sheen as well.
I haven't set on the color for the mouth, or eyes as of yet. I do have some gold paint and and I think I might use that somewhere on it. but I'm far from done with the "blood red" paint and will be going over the other painted spots to ensure things look cleaner. The final step when all is done is a clear gloss protective spray to seal the paint and ensure the paint doesn't fade.
So far this has been an interesting paint and my wife is eager to see the final result.
I'll take pictures of the other mini's as I get them done, but right now Narthrax Dragon is my focus.
And on a separate note, yes I am working on that other blog entry on crafting a home brew game system. Its just a lot of writing to do before it can be posted.
