Alright folks it's time for a review. Now as of the time of this writing I'm up to episode 6. To start I'll make this as spoiler free as I can. One of the first things to keep in mind is that this show is not only a "from the start" retelling of Voltron. There are a number of changes besides the appearance of Voltron, so you will want to keep this in mind when you start watching.
To start let's go over who is who.
Now in the image here you have the pilots of the lions, known as Paladins of Voltron.
- First there is Shiro, leader of the team. Now in the origin it was Keith, but that's different now. Shiro is the cool and calm leader of the team who has quite some trauma behind how he joins everyone.
- Second is Keith next up. He's a capable fighter and extremely skilled pilot, but he is something of a hot head.
- Third up is Lance. Well every team needs the comic relief and that part falls to Lance. He's a troublemaker, bit girl crazy, and easily duped. But he is a decent pilot (not as good as Keith though).
- Fourth member of the team is Pidge. Still the tech genius of the team, but there is a significant change about who this character is that is revealed after a few episodes. I won't ruin it, but you may be able to guess what it is early on if your clever and good at catching a few subtle hints.
- Finally there is Hunk. The mechanic of the team, he's a guy who would rather eat and sleep then fight...well initially. He also has some issues with Lance's piloting and frequently suffers from motion sickness.
However what is the team with out certain additional characters.
- Coran the royal advisor is an alien, and yes he and Allura share common features for their species. He is quite knowledgeable but is often just as comical as Lance, and is prone to panicking.
- Then there is Princess Allura. This is not a weak damsel, she is a no-nonsense, take charge woman who has an air of authority that is befitting one who was brought up to be royalty. She death defying and courageous. Her only fault is that she's too serious. The only problem she constantly faces is Lance's advances toward her. And yes her mice are there too.
Each episode is around an hour long, and there are 11 total episodes. Obviously they're going to be adding more seasons, and so far at episode 8 (which is where I am at now as I type this), the show is interesting with some character development and without the "monster of the day" motif that was often in the original series.
Whats also interesting is the Voltron has some new tricks up its mechanical slieve, but you'll have to the show to figure out what those are.
Artistically the show clearly gets influences from Avatar the Last Air Bender (& Legend of Kora). Humor is the same as well.
So far I've personally been enjoying the show and I'm keen on seeing how the last episodes play out.
If you're a fan of Voltron and haven't sat down to watch the show yet, do yourself a favor and do it. The show is certainly enjoyable and well worth the watch!
